Leaving San Francisco

We boarded the ship around noon and settled in.

The stateroom was quite comfortable and this time I had a balcony. It was often chilly on this cruise so we didn't spend a lot of time out there, but it was nice to have and made the space seem larger.

This is the view from the balcony looking back at San Francisco.

The afternoon we left the fog was quite thick and we couldn't see the Golden Gate Bridge at all. We were able to see the Bay Bridge as we left the dock.

Instruction about how to survive disasters is the first (and only) required event. I actually had trouble staying awake for the talk and demonstration.

The rest of the day we explored the ship and ate. It took most of the cruise to figure out where everything was. We typically got lost and headed to the wrong end of the ship at least once a day.

San Francisco

We arrived in San Francisco around 10 AM and headed to the hotel, which was on the top of a hill  in downtown San Francisco. We checked in and went to China Town for lunch.  From the hotel it was straight DOWN about four city blocks. I was glad I didn't have to walk back UP those city blocks. Carolyn and I were headed to the Pier after lunch to take an excursion to Alcatraz Island. The lady at the hotel told us it was pretty flat from China Town to the Pier. Right..... The definition of "flat" is very different in San Francisco that it is in Missouri.

We finally arrived at the Pier and found the ferry. This was the fourth time I had tried to go to Alcatraz. The last time was when I met Molly and Hillary in San Francisco for a week-end in Napa. I purchased the tickets for the afternoon we were to arrive so we could go before heading to Napa. My connecting flight through LA was canceled and I arrived too late to go.

This time I actually lost the tickets at the Pier. Fortunately some lady found them blowing across the ground and returned them to us. We really did get to the island!

The view looking back at San Francisco from the ferry.

And looking forward to Alcatraz. I didn't take pictures on the Island, but it's pretty amazing. The audio tour of the prison is very well done. I found it interesting that the employees and families also lived on the island.

When we got back to San Francisco we walked along the waterfront through the touristy shops to the protected area for the sea lions. They were all pretty lazy.

We met up with the rest of the group for a nice dinner and then back to the hotel for a quick night's sleep then up and headed to Alaska.

The London Trip

I had the good fortune, got the London trip, of Molly blogging our adventures. I'm now headed to Alaska on a two week cruise with friends from church, so I guess this story is up to me. I'll do my best

I had no idea how overwhelming the packing would be because of variable weather  expectations and the need for a fancy clothes for evening activities. I finally got all of this into one suitcase, then packed shoes and other stuff into the carry on. The only thing I forgot was make-up! Found a Walgreen's two blocks from the San Francisco hotel, so will head a there before we board the shop.

Suitcase is Packed

Except for the make-up kit, the suitcase is packed and ready to go. Chargers for all the various electronic devices are included. Molly assured me there are stores in London and I can actually buy anything that I need!

I stopped by to see the grandchildren this evening. They told me they are expecting a present. Mira wants the Eiffel Tower. Griffin wants Star Wars stuff. Sully doesn't care and Harry had no idea what anyone was talking about. He was just mad at his train.

All reports are written and submitted an my e-mail says I am gone.

Heading to London

Thursday morning I leave Kansas City and will meet Molly in New York on our way to London and Paris! Seems this adventure is worth documenting.

Tonight I have been making piles of clothes and trying to figure out what to take for the trip. I can't decide whether to over or under pack. I'll finish a couple of loads of laundry tonight and see what fits in the suitcase tomorrow night.

Motion Sensors

Last week I was in Florida where I stayed at The Doubletree Hotel in West Palm Beach for two nights. From start to finish, it was a disaster!

A little background is needed here. Two weeks prior I had stayed there and was frustrated that I couldn't get the room cool enough to sleep. I called the desk the second day and told them my thermostat did not work as the room was much warmer than the hall. The sent the maintenance man up to my room and he messed with the thermostat and the air condition clicked on. He explained the thermostat was regulated by a motion sensor, but he had 'bypassed' the feature. I was amazed and told him I though that was pretty crazy, as one would need to get up and walk around every couple of hours all night to stay comfortable. He laughed and agreed and said the hotel was being remodeled and that he though his 'helper' had adjusted all the rooms, but apparently had missed this one.

Now back to last week. Yes, the hotel is undergoing an extensive remodel. Based on what the maintenance man had told me, if figured the thermostat issue had been addressed and didn't even mention it when I checked in.

So I'm checking in. The guy checking me in kept messing with the computer hunting for a room. I asked for an upgrade and he said he was looking. Note that I had a co-worker with me who worked with a different desk person, was second in line and was checked in and on her way to her room, while my guy was still messing with the computer. He finally gave me a key and I see I am on the second floor. That is unusual because I am typically on the upper floors due to my Diamond status, but I figure some floors are closed for the remodel. I arrive at my room to discover he has put me in a handicapped room. Now I am glad hotels have handicapped rooms, but I don't need one and don't want one. Some handicapped rooms are okay and just have additional grab bars, etc. True handicapped rooms have no counter space in the bathrooms, and strange furniture and are not overly comfortable. This was one of those. I started to deal with it, and probably would have if it had just been for one night, but I was there for two and decided wanted a different room. I called down to the desk and complained. I got the same fellow, who apologized and said he would bring me a key for a different room. I stepped into the hall and waited, wondering why it took him so long to find THIS room for me. The next room was fine, except that the lights over the vanity in the bathroom did not work. I dropped my stuff and went to the dining room to meet my co-worker for dinner.

The room seemed comfortable when I went to bed, but then I awoke hot and sweaty around midnight. When I stood up to go to the bathroom, I heard the air conditioner click on. Ah ha! Motion Sensors on the air conditioner! I was furious. The rest of the night I would get the room cool, go to sleep, then awaken in about an hour, hot and sweaty, sit up and wave my arms and the air conditioner would click back on.

Come morning, I went to the front desk, asked to have my vanity lights fixed and that the motion sensor on the air conditioner be by passed so I would be able to sleep. The desk attendant apologized and said he would have everything taken care of my the time I came back after work. When I got back, the lights worked and as I puttered around in the room through the evening the room stayed cool and did not react to my activity. Then I go to sleep......and awaken around 1AM hot and sweaty and as I sit up, the air conditioner clicks on. Can you imagine how mad I am? And this continues through the rest of the night.

I finally give up around 6 and get up. Next issue. My hair is half dry when my hair dryer blows up. I called down for another one and am told someone will bring on right up. I wait, and wait, and wait, and 20 minute later all back down and ask if the had to go to Wal-Mart. "You don't have it?" He asks. "I gave it to the housekeeping supervisor when you called." A few minutes later they bring the hair dryer. I plug it in......and it doesn't work. I call back down and loose it. I communicate my intense dissatisfaction about the motion sensors on the air conditioner and explain that I am scheduled to be back at the hotel in two weeks and will be diligently working to find a different hotel. He is quite sympathetic and offers me 10,000 extra points, which I accept, and asks if he can have the manager call me. Not sure what that will accomplish, but, sure, he can call.

The manager calls me later that evening, while am waiting to board the plane home. He agrees with me about the motion sensors and explains that many hotels are using this technology as it is a 'green initiative'. I say, "I can't believe I am the only person who complains." He answers that I am not. Many people complain and ask to have it bypassed and he doesn't understand why my room reverted to the motion sensors once it was bypassed. He certainly hopes I will give them another try.

I will be at the Embassy Suites in Boca Raton in two weeks. Fortunately I was able to arrange other lodging and will probably not be staying at the Doubletree in the near future.

Late Night

Southwest called at noon to tell me my 8PM flight was delayed until 11PM.. They already knew at NOON. This flight rarely leaves on time, but is usually only around an hour delayed. By the time I left Lake Havasu City at 4, it was scheduled to leave at 11:35.

I decided to wait and eat at the airport to use up some time, but when I arrived at the concourse around 7:30, everything was closed. I've never seen the Las Vegas airport so dead. I guess July 3 is  not a big travel day. I walked back to a different concourse and finally found a restaurant and used up an hour there. Then went back to my gate and settled down to wait. I read and dozed and hoped they would leave earlier, but no such luck. When we started boarding a little before 11PM they announced we could spread out, there were only 20 people going to Kansas City. I don't think I have ever been on a flight with only 20 people that wasn't downsized to a little plane.

When we arrived in Kansas City, as I walked through the airport to baggage claim, I saw all these people standing around at the ticket counter, which was not open at the time. I had noticed an AirTran plane at the gate and figured something had happened to cause these people to be stuck at the airport. Only when I noticed the boards had two flights listed that were to leave at 5:30AM did I realize that these people were here waiting for the ticket counter to open so they could leave. They thought it was MORNING! I thought it was still the middle of the night.

Made it home, crawled into bed and turned off my light to catch some sleep at 4:45 AM.

Happy Fourth of July!
